The Best Thing About Catan…

It appears that the most provoking articles are the ones where I’m wrong or at least wildly off base in some regard.

In an experiment to see how strong this effect really is, I have only one thought for you today: Although Settlers of Catan is a great game for many reasons, the absolute best thing about it is the really slick ranged combat mechanic.

While I will not condone the degradation of the content of your articles by responding to such out right baiting, I will comment on how I like the new look. At first I thought I navigated to the wrong pge. It will take a little getting used to though.

Ok so I lied I am going to respond to it. I’ll just say that you sparked an idea in my head for combining mechanics from dragon dice and settlers I’ll give this some more thought and get back to you.

You can go ahead and click it–it’s a cute easter egg that’s safe for work.

OK I clicked and it doesn’t do anything. (Running IE 6.0) I guess technically that is safe for work.

For some reason, this is making me want to combine the Diskwars ranged combat mechanic with Settlers…

In an amazing coincidence, I already have an article about the Diskwars ranged combat system sitting in the queue to be posted. Although the article didn’t mention how it could be integrated with Catan.

Well, I think that the range combat system is a little too random. One out of every six rolls (assuming standard probability) aollws one player to hit any hex on the grid from any distance, except for the one last hit. Plus in the baron’s attack, he also makes all players with a lot of resources discard cards. It is so arbitrary, and yet I always find myself getting hit more often than other players. You can attempt to control when and where the baron attacks; but it costs a stone, grain, and sheep, you only have a 14/25 chance of actually being able to move it, and then not till your next turn.

What I really enjoy is the game theory and collective action aspects of Catan.

And here I thought the best part of Catan was the opportunity to make incessant “wood for sheep” jokes.

I clicked the bugs, and it worked for me on IE 6.0…

No popup blocker on my system though, so that might have something to do with it….
